My name is Erin. And I am funk-ay.

Basic Information:

I'm a 29-year-old female from Spokane, Washington. Graduate school brings me to Bowling Green, Ohio, where I live with my wonderful husband, two cats, and a baby on the way (due March 2009).

I have a B.A. in English literature, a M.A. in English with an emphasis in rhetoric & writing, and I'm working on finishing up a Ph.D. in Rhetoric & Writing. I want to be a professor of English when I grow up. My greatest passion is teaching composition to university students. Teaching is the most dynamically challenging and rewarding thing I have ever done, and I hope to continue teaching, learning, and learning to teach for the rest of my working life. I write about this a lot.

I also love researching stuff that has to do with the Internets, new media, democratic engagement, identity, community, and literacy. At the moment I'm particularly interested in figuring out the extent to which "Web 2.0" can revitalize the public sphere (if such a thing exists at all), and the ways in which new media composing strategies can create a speaking space for "ordinary" people, particularly those who are often disenfranchised by traditional modes of discourse.


Please understand that this journal is not designed to be a great work of literature. It's a personal journal. This is where I write about things that are going on in my daily life and release the clutter from my (highly overactive) brain. I am required by many other life endeavors to be meticulous about spelling/grammar/content. This is not one of them.

I also have many real-life friends and family members on LiveJournal and am glad that I live in an age where we can so easily stay connected through the Mighty World Wide Web, even if we don't write each other as often as we should.

Hobbies/Interests:

My current hobby of choice is scrapbooking, even though I'm still a novice. I also enjoy photography, writing (duh), board games, camping, wasting time on the computer, and the usual recreational stuff that everyone likes, like movies. Feel free to recommend your favorite books, even though my English degree gives me a license to hate reading. And to make up words. And to write in fragments. Like this.

I'm addicted to Diet Coke.

I quit smoking on May 7, 2006. This is a battle that I must win.
